Introduction

On July 4th, China’s first independently developed 15-megawatt heavy-duty gas turbine was officially rolled off the production line at Dongfang Electric Corporation Dongfang Turbine Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Dongfang Turbine").

This heavy-duty gas turbine, the G15 model, is the second product in Dongfang Turbine’s series of independently developed gas turbines. It has a power output of 16.5 megawatts, a thermal efficiency of 35%, and a turbine inlet temperature of 1450 K. Compared to similar power coal-fired power plants, it can reduce carbon emissions by over 150,000 tons per year. In combined cycle mode, it can generate over 22,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per hour, sufficient to meet the daily electricity needs of 2,500 households.

Compared to the previous G50, the G15 gas turbine is approximately 0.6 times smaller in scale, with a more integrated overall structure, making its manufacturing more challenging. To address this, Dongfang Turbine employed directional solidification technology for the high-temperature turbine blades, significantly improving their high-temperature mechanical properties and ensuring the blades' safety and reliability during operation. For high-temperature coatings, supersonic flame spraying was used to create a uniformly dense protective layer. Additionally, 3D printing technology was applied to complex and narrow-gap components such as the burner tail cone, addressing issues related to deformation and machining difficulties.

 

The successful roll-out of the G15 heavy-duty gas turbine signifies another milestone achievement for China in the high-end equipment manufacturing field. It not only reflects Dongfang Turbine’s deep expertise in the independent development of gas turbines but also highlights significant progress in China’s application of new materials and technologies. It also showcases the growing strength of China’s domestic manufacturing capabilities in the high-end equipment sector.
